Are you trying to decide on the menu for a wedding reception? Well, look no further. This article will give you everything you need to know to decide. You have several options when it comes to the menu for a wedding reception. It really all depends on how many people you have in attendance, how much you are willing to spend, the type of reception you are having and your own food preferences. If you aren’t picky and you feel like you have the best event planner, then you could also leave the choice up to them. However, if you feel like this is something that you should decide, as most bride and grooms do, then here are a few ideas that you can choose from.

Buffet Style
This is when you forego the event menus all together and set up a long table of different kinds of food that the guests can pick from and serve themselves, getting as much or as little as the want. This sounds like it would work for the guests but you have to consider all the angles and make it would work for you to. Keep in mind that if your guests have open access to the food, so will the children which isn’t always a good idea. Also, you’ll probably have to buy a lot more food than you normally would as people tend to loan up when it’s a buffet and then don’t eat it all. You’ll have to take into account those than come up for seconds and thirds also. However, it’s a great way to let your guests start eating right away if you plan on taking pictures before you get there.

Pot Luck Style
While you might not want to ask your guests in attendance to bring an item of food to your wedding, there’s nothing wrong with delegating this out to the wedding party. If each of you has three people standing up with you, that’s eight people that can contribute to the potluck. Mothers of the bride and groom and aunts and siblings are likely to want to contribute as well. You would just have to delegate out what you want each person to bring so that you don’t have to many double ups and not enough of something else. Don’t forget to keep dessert in mind if you are doing a pot luck.

One or the Other
One of the best event catering ideas is to have a ‘one or the other’ option on your RSVP card. Getting people to RSVP in the first place is difficult so if you include a food decision, they are likely to RSVP quicker to make sure they get their chosen dish. You could include the menu for a wedding reception, such as chicken or fish, pasta or soup or whatever combination of food you are serving. Everyone will pick on the main dishes and then you’ll know in advance, how much of each you’ll have to make. The sides can be the same for all plates.

Appetizers
If you are having a more casual reception, then the menu for a wedding reception doesn’t have to be extravagant. People would probably be happy with some finger foods and appetizers. Chicken wings, pigs in a blanket, salad, fruit and veggie platters, etc are perfectly acceptable for a more toned down wedding. Again, however, you’d have to consider any children in attendance. They tend to grab things without using the tongs and serving spoons provided so you might want to either have the food carried around by professional catering services or you could place it higher up like on a bar counter top.

These four options are pretty much where it’s at; have a buffet, either catered or privately cooked, have it pot luck style, allow your guests to choose beforehand or serve finger foods. Any of these options are great, it just really depends on the type of wedding you are having and the type of person you are. We recently attended a wedding where they served tons and tons of pizza. It might seem odd but it was perfect because everyone knew the groom was in love with pizza almost as much as he was his new bride.
