Jersey Mike’s – Brea

A lot of hoopla went around a couple weeks ago with the opening of Jersey Mike’s in Brea so I decided to see what all the fuss was about after the fan fare of the grand opening had subsided.  Jersey Mike’s is a franchise that has been around for years, with the first Jersey Mike’s opening in 1956 in New Jersey and now over 300 locations nationwide!  Mike’s is predominately located on the East Coast with only recently opening in California the past couple years.  Quality wise they are above just about anything Subway, Quiznos, and even Togo’s puts on the plate.  I would most compare Mike’s to that of the local deli, with fresh sliced meats and cheeses to go along with store cooked bread.img_0451.jpg  Their menu rages from wraps, cold subs, hot subs, and salads.

Being that this was my first visit I decided to take it simple and order something I would order anywhere else, the #8 Club Sub ($7.75 for regular size) which consists of turkey, ham, provolone, bacon, mayo.  The sub had just about the right amount of everything on it, 3 thin slices of provolone, about 5 ham and 4 turkey (or maybe it was 5 turkey I was distracted as I talked to the owner), then piled with green lettuce (I stress this because I’m so used to seeing predominately white lettuce at many sub shops), tomatoes, vinegar, olive oil, spices, and my added choice of banana peppers, mayo and bacon.  It reminded me a lot of subs I used to get at the Sub Stop over in my hometown of Stanton, so it really hit the spot and filled something I’ve been missing.  Along with the sub I got some Mrs. Vickie’s chips and a soda which brought my lunch up to right around $10.00, before tax, which isn’t cheap when you compare it to Subway but this isn’t the crap they try to pass off as fresh.img_0456.jpg

Overall I was satisfied with my meal, I would go there again, and I already know what I will get on my next visit, the #20 Grilled Pastrami Reuben, and then after that I’ll have to try one of the cheesesteaks and see how to hold up compared to Philly’s Best.

Boy! did you and your taste buds get BamBoozled!

You were right about one thing “Thin Slices” of everything placed on the sandwich. For $10 dollars I am going to a sub shop that is gonna give me some piled on meat and fixens.

I did give J.M.’s a couple of chances to convince me, but it was always the same thing at two differnet shops, too much bread to meat raito, bread tasted blaah, and pricey.

    Anyway that is my opinion

@BeachBumBob: I’m starting to agree with you, it wasn’t anything special. But when I compare it to Subway or Quiznos it was a lot better. Price wise for the combo I would say it’s maybe about 1-2 bucks more then I would spend normally for a sandwich, chip, and drink. But now that I think about it if I go to Togos (my usual sandwich shop near me) it’s right around 9 bucks, I think or maybe just over 10.

I guess I’m just not too worried that the slices of meat at thin, I don’t need a ton of meat on my sub to enjoy it I just need to taste it, one thing I didn’t mention I didn’t really taste or care for their bacon.

I’ll give them another try but they aren’t anything special and my 3 stars is probably generous, should probably be more like an average 2.5 stars.
