Scottie’s Smokehouse – Orange (CLOSED)

in OC Food Reviews

Now that I’m officially a resident of the city of Orange I figured my first official review as a resident would be one of Scottie’s Smokehouse,  the newest BBQ joint in Orange.  I’d seen Scottie’s a couple times, tucked in the same strip mall as Poncho’s Mexican Restaurant and I kept telling myself I wanted to check it out, but up until a reminder today from Nancy over at Fast Food Maven I had forgot.  I’m glad I didn’t forget this time because Scottie’s appears to be a gem.  I was greeted the moment I walked in just after opening.  They were getting a soda fountain installed so things were a little hectic for them but it wasn’t anything that stopped them from providing good service and good food.  Not much special about the inside of the restaurant other then the USC flag which I appreciated until I saw a UCLA flag as well, but I will forgive them for that.img_0317.jpg The items and prices are up on a chalkboard there are 5 “Easy Meal” options which include a sandwich or meat combo along with sides for different amounts, or if you want you can order off the ala cart menu.

I choose to go with the Meat Combo A ($11.70) which includes 2 oz. beef brisket, 2 pork ribs, 1 andouille sausage, 2 sides, and BBQ.img_0319.jpg The brisket was perfectly smoked, the ribs had lots of meat and pulled off the bones just enough to eat them easily, the sausage had just a bit of spice, and all the meats were covered with some of their awesome BBQ sauce.  BBQ sauce is a gift from the gods and Scottie’s is one of the better ones I’ve had in my Eat in OC endeavors.  The beans were what I can only call texas style which aren’t my favorite but they weren’t bad, just not my first choice when it comes to BBQ.  The cornbread wasn’t dry, which was a huge plus, I’d put it just a little above average due to it not having  much flavor, but it held up good to the butter and honey that I put on it.  All in all it was a really good meal that I look forward to having again.  I’m looking forward to taking the Mrs. there for my next Scottie’s Smokehouse BBQ experience.

Visit on 02/20/09 @11 am for lunch

Thanks for the review of this place. We’re semi-new to Orange and I’ll be looking forward to reading some more Orange restaurant reviews. I saw an ad for this place, but we have’t checked it out yet. Now we’ll definitely have to. We’re big BBQ fans. Thanks again!

Maybe it’s just me, but $11.00 dollars it sure did’nt look like much, kind of skimmpy for what you paid for in my opinion. Did that include a soda or sides?

It included the sides, not the soda. It was more then enough of food IMO. Looking at Blake’s Place menu the same thing is about 12 dollars, and at Beach Pit doesn’t have a comparable because even their 2 meat is a dinner plate and is 16.95. Now could it be cheaper, yes but I don’t think you’d be able to find good smoked meat for much cheaper. They sell beef brisket 1 pound of $12.25 which is more expensive then Blake’s ($10.99). But then the pulled pork is $10.50 compared to Blake’s at $10.99. And lastly a smoked chicken at Scottie’s is 50 cents more ($10.50) to Blake’s ($9.99).

@Chubbypanda: Yeah I really liked the sausage, much better then the beef sausage I got over at Mike’s BBQ in Stanton late in 2008 (no review done).
