the crow bar and kitchen – Corona del Mar

We headed out to the crow bar and kitchen in Corona del Mar a couple of weeks ago during the week of my birthday. I’d heard a lot about the crow bar and figured it was as good a time as any to see what they had to offer.
Mrs. DanGarion ordered the Grandma Jane burger ($7.50), toasted bay’s english muffin, herbed cream cheese, sliced red onion, vine ripe organic tomato, onion sprouts. She ended up not being that big of a fan of the burger and felt the herbed cream cheese had little flavor other than that of cream cheese.

I ordered the crow bar burger.

The crow bar burger comes with tallegio & gorgonzola, house made ketchup, wild rocket, rosemary bun. The patty was juicy, but the rest of the burger was really just average.

In addition to my burger I had an order of their crow fries.

Their version of “animal” fries. Duck fat fried shoestring fries, caramelized onions, melted cheddar cheese, secret sauce, crow hot sauce and house pickles. I liked these quite a bit but thought it should have had more hot sauce and the fries were greasy and underdone. The order was more than enough for 4 people to share. I wish they had a smaller order for one.

We have both vowed that if we go again we will order an entrée instead of burgers, since neither burger really left us satisfied.

I also wanted to mention (even though my review will not take this into account) our waitress was terrible. The restaurant wasn’t busy but she basically ignored us the entire time we were there. It’s not that hard to check in on a customer every once in a while. I had drunk my soda by the time our food had arrived and it wasn’t refilled till after my burger was gone. I reflected the inadequate service in our tip.

We’d probably come back to the crow bar and kitchen one more time to check out their dinner entrées, I almost ordered the Duck Fat Fried Chicken they had as a special of the day, hopefully they will have that next time we are there. They do have an extensive beer and wine list for those that are looking for drinks while in Corona Del Mar. I also highly recommend checking out their secret menu before going there, there are some good-looking meals on it!

I’ve only gone for lunch and had nothing but great service, but I guess it would always just depend on the specific server. I love the burger there – especially the Hangover burger (bacon & egg) served during weekend brunch. I also really like their fish n’ chips. Unfortunately, I don’t work over that way any more, nor do I really have the spare cash to spend since I can’t get out of there without a beer or two from their beer list that always has some good options and rotates frequently.

Yes that burger looks good. The one I had was ok, but it wasn’t even close to the greatest burgers I’ve had. I’m not sure what was up with the waitress, she was just so flaky.

I went for dinner with my wife a month or so ago. You should try the sausage trio w/fresh baked pretzel. that was pretty good.

That sucks about your service, our service was great the night we went. Give them another chance and see what happens.

I’m sure we will give them another try. We both agreed it was worth checking them out once more.

Good or bad service really makes a big impact on your dining experience.

Exactly when the service is bad it’s hard to separate it from the food.

The hamburger are probably the most dynamic item on the menu,

Well that’s disappointing since we weren’t impressed by them.

You make a good point in this review about the service here. I’ve been here three times, and I tend to leave focused on the food items I’ve tried so much that I had forgotten until I read your review, that I’ve had poor service all three times. What doesn’t help is that this place is so busy, seven days a week, that the servers seem overloaded and tend to forget all about you (and any requests or orders you might make). Extra staff would certainly help. The food is hit or miss here also, in my experience, although I’ve had better experiences with the burgers and sandwiches than you have had, sounds like.
