Del Taco Classic Tacos – Poll

March 24, 2009 · Filed Under OC Food Reviews · 2 Comments

Hello trusty readers!  The Mrs. and I decided to take advantage of the new and improved Taco Tuesday at Del Taco that I heard about from Nancy the Fast Food Maven.  And I come to you with the same questions she ran into, what really is the difference from a regular taco and classic taco?  Sure they claim that they have "twice" the meat, and "twice" the cheese, but they don't appear to be different other then that the Classic Tacos have tomatoes and that they wrap them in old school "classic" Del Taco orange paper.

Which one of these tacos look bigger?

I'm disappointed with Del Taco and what appears to be false advertising.  The only thing there appears to be twice of is lettuce!

Carl’s Jr – Jumbo Chili Dogs

February 27, 2009 · Filed Under OC Food News, OC Food Reviews · 2 Comments
img_0336.jpg Long ago, before I was born Carl Karcher of Carl's Jr. fame used to sell hot dogs and went on to found Carl's Jr. which at one time sold Chili Dogs.  I heard from Nancy over at Fast Food Maven that Carl's Jr. was testing out Chili Dogs in some select Carl's Jr.s in Orange County and the Inland Empire.  I fortunately didn't have to look far as I was able to locate them at the Carl's on 4555 Jurupa St., Ontario, CA, 91761. img_0338.jpg

First thing I have to say is that 3 bucks for 2 Chili Dogs is a steal, especially since these aren't thise sissy sized thinner then your pinky dogs they sell at Wienerschnitzel, these were some jumbo dogs as nearly as thick as my thumb which really impressed me.  Unfortunately the chili wasn't as good as the delicious nector they serve at Wienerschnitzel.  The chili wasn't terrible, I'd say it's not as sweet as I was expecting after being brought up on Chili Dogs from the ' Der (as in der'Wienerschnitzel!) img_0339.jpg

So if I were to rate them as chili dogs, compared to those I've had from Der, PCH, Pink's (at the LA Fair), and Carl's, I'd say the order currently is.

1. PCH
2. Der'Wienerschnitzel
3. Carl's Jr.
4. Pink's (specifically at the LA Fair, never been to a real one)

There you have it.

Just an FYI, I was a real trooper I waited till I got a break at 2 PM to try these out just so I could provide pictures after saying I was going to check them out on Fast Food Maven.

I don't have a press release for this, but I'd like to officially announce that the Farmers Boy on 17th St. in Santa Ana has reopened.  The fast casual restaurant located at 2205 E 17th St.  was open this morning as I made my way back home.  I even turned around and drove by again to get a picture.

Santa Ana Farmer Boys Reopened!

This is a big deal to me, since Mrs. DanGarion is a big fan of their breakfast and their burgers.  Nancy over at Fast Food Maven had annouced that Farmer Boys closed back in Sept.  I've always been a fan of Farmer Boys because of their local business status and I know we will once again patronize them.  Let's hope they have fixed whatever caused them to close originally.

OC Food History – Taco Bell

October 30, 2008 · Filed Under OC Food News · Comment

Taco Bell is a long time Orange County standard, from it's first incarnation in neighboring Downey to it's headquarters in Irvine Taco Bell is Southern California. When I was growing up we didn't really get food from there much, but then came high school, and there wasn't a single weekend out with my friends that didn't include dinner at Taco Bell. Here is a blast from the past Taco Bell commercial from 1981.

What's even cooler about the commerical is that the first split second has a "Family Film Festival" title.  Many people from Southern Califoria that grew up in the 60s, 70s, and 80s should recognize as a show that used to be on KTLA on the weekends and hosted by Tom Hatten (you might remember him as the Popeye guy)!

Del Taco Grand Opening – Ontario

August 22, 2008 · Filed Under OC Food News · Comment

Just wanted to let those of you that live in Ontario near Jurupa and the I-15 that there is a new Del Taco that officially opened up yesterday.  I went there today to pick up some lunch and it was packed.  The parking situation is going to be a little tough till they figure it out.  But you get the same great Del Taco that you are accustomed to and it's definitely in a great spot because there aren't many choices around.  I had a brief talk with the owner (Gary) and he was dressed in uniform helping customers and making sure people were getting their orders.
