New Trends With One of America’s Favorite Desserts
Americans love to indulge in a variety of desserts. Ice cream and other frozen treats are usually at the top of the list for 90% of United States households, however. On an annual basis, there are roughly 1.5 billion gallons of ice cream and other types of frozen desserts produced in this country.
Vanilla continues to be one of America’s favorite flavors, according to the International Ice Cream Association member companies. Almost 30% of their consumers prefer vanilla, partially because it’s such a versatile flavor. It can also be enjoyed, of course, with other types of desserts, such as cake, cookies, and pie. Even though vanilla may be a favorite flavor for many ice cream lovers, chocolate, cookies /n cream, mint chocolate chip, and chocolate chip cookie dough are right behind it.
The International Ice Cream Association also reports that those involved in this business, from manufacturers to chefs, are always focused on creating new flavors. The 2017 Ice Cream Flavor Competition showcased several new flavors that are sure to sate the palate of frozen dessert lovers. The most innovative flavors in this competition were Sweet Me Strawberry Rhubarb Cobbler Ice Cream, Honey Roasted Peanut Butter Ice Cream, and Cool Mint Sandwiches. There were also a few “unusual smoky and spicy flavors” that appealed to people at this competition.
Since some people may need or want to abstain from certain ingredients for health and/or dietary reasons, the International Ice Cream Association indicated that ice cream, frozen yogurt, and other treats are available to address these situations. This ranges from reduced-fat to sugar-free frozen treats. Another plus is that pre-packaged frozen yogurt cups, along with other types of single-serving frozen treats, also continue to be popular among individuals that want to limit their caloric intake of just for added convenience.
Given the resurgence of stores and restaurants that offer specialty ice cream dishes on their menus, more and more Americans are able to enjoy various flavor combinations. Whether they a unique dessert following a meal at a fine-dining restaurant or take it to-go in individual ice cream or yogurt cups, the NPD Group reports that 40% of Americans will enjoy some ice cream every two weeks or so. Chances are, however, that many Americans of all ages will indulge even more often.
