What is salsa? We all know that this dip is delicious, but it also has a rich background along with it’s bold flavor. The word “salsa” is Spanish for “sauce,” and it comes from Spanish roots. In English-speaking countries, the sauce usually is synonymous with Mexican cuisine.
There are many different types of salsa, but they are most often tomato-based. Salsa became so popular in English-speaking countries because of it’s flavor, which ranges from mild to extremely spicy. Classic mild salsa dip is the most popular, whereas pico de gallo salsa dips can be very hot and therefore not as popular
Different types of salsa: Southwestern salsa recipes or Mexican salsas were traditionally made using a mortar and pestle (a cup with a wide mashing stick). However, blenders are normally used today.
The most well known different types of salsa include the following:
- Salsa Roja: Also known as “red sauce,” this is normally used as a condiment in Mexican and Southwestern United States cuisines (as opposed to your traditional Ketchup). This recipe includes cooked tomatoes, chili peppers, onions, garlic, and fresh cilantro.
- Pico de Gallo: Often called “rooster’s beak” or “fresh sauce,” this salsa is made with only raw ingredients. These include tomatoes, lime juice, chili peppers, onions, cilantro leaves, and any other fresh veggies. The secret is to coarsely chop all ingredients to make it chunky.
- Salsa Cruda: This “raw sauce” is composed of uncooked chopped tomatoes, onions, jalapeno peppers, and cilantro. This type of salsa is usually a bit more on the spicy side because of the jalapenos.
- Salsa Verde: An increasingly popular type of salsa, this sauce is normally found in traditional, authentic Mexican restaurants in the U.S. The “green sauce” is made with tomatillos that are usually cooked.
- Salsa taquera: Known to many as “taco sauce,” this delicious salsa goes great on recipes with salsa dip involved, such as burritos. This famous sauce is made with tomatillos and morita chili and has a mild heat to it.
- Salsa negra: A more unique type of salsa, but still native to Mexican cuisine, is this “black sauce.” This salsa is made from dried chilis, oil, and garlic and is great for both spreading and dipping.
