Yesterday I review Piaggio Gourmet on Wheels from my visit to the Anaheim Farmers Market and today I’m doing a quick review of Crepes Bonaparte another food truck that travels around Orange County.

Crepes Bonaparte makes crepes (click here for the truck menu).  Honestly these aren’t your everyday run of the mill crepes that you get at IHOP, these are made to order fresh from the grill crepes, with your choice of both sweet and savory varieties.  Being that I had already had lunch from Piaggio, I decided to check out one of the six dessert crepes that Crepes Bonaparte makes.

Dessert crêpe options are as follows.

HazelBerryAna - Strawberry, Banana & Nutella

Le Classique - Strawberry or Banana, Nutella & Whipped Cream
Big Banana Man - Banana, Caramel & Whipped Cream
Spicy Apple Bottoms - Cooked Cinnamon Apple, Caramel & Whipped Cream
PCH - Peanut Butter, Chocolate & Honey
Dirt Worm - Oreo Cookie Crumbs, Gummy Worms & Whipped Cream
All desserts are $3.99 (with a $0.99 ice cream addition option).  The most expensive crepes on the menu at $4.99.
Crepes Bonaparte PCH Crepe

I have the PCH on a wheat crepe.  But instead of chocolate I had Nutella.  I’d never had Nutella before, but I could see myself enjoying spoonfuls of those stuff now that I have.  The crepe was really hot, almost too hot for my sensitive fingers, but I manned up and dealt with it, I mean I was eating a crepe, I’m lucky it wasn’t a quiche!  The crepe was fantastic, but is there anything better than a bunch of yummy sweet stuff wrapped in anything?  The Nutella and honey mixed wonderfully, although I wish the banana pieces were bigger.  The PCH was the perfect end to a very good filling lunch.  I’d love to check out their savory crepes in the future and finish it off with another PCH!
Crepes Bonaparte also provides custom crepe stations at private parties and events.

Piaggio on Wheels

Piaggio on Wheels

For lunch today I went down to the Anaheim Farmers Market and tried Piaggio Gourmet on Wheels as well as Crepes Bonaparte (review will be posted tomorrow).  First off I’d like to say that the Anaheim Farmers Market gives Irvine’s a run for its money, I was really impressed with the vegetable selection, number of vendors, and the fact that it is open from 12pm-7pm every Thursday.  I found out yesterday via the Fast Food Maven over at the Orange County Register that Anaheim was going to start hosting food trucks during the farmers market and I decided I couldn’t pass up being one of the first to check it out.

If you aren’t familiar with Piaggio on Wheels you should check out their website.  They are an Orange County based, Argentine taco truck, serving everything from empanadas to dulce de leche.  Being that it was my first experience with Piaggio I decided to have a sample of a couple different items on their menu.

Menu for the day included Tacos, Empanadas, Sausage Sandwiches, Brisket and Pork Sliders, Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs, Quesadillas, Burritos, Chimi Fries, and Churros with Dulce de Leche.

Piaggio on Wheels Pulled Pork Sliders

Piaggio on Wheels Pulled Pork Sliders $5.00 for two

First up was the Pulled Pork Sliders, two pulled pork sliders, served on hawaiian buns with chimichurri and pink sauce.  The pork was perfectly cooked to where it was moist and fell apart, much like carnitas, but a much leaner cut of meat.  My previous experience with chimichurri sauce was the Trader Joe’s rice variety and I loathed it, but Piaggio’s freshly made chimichurri has turned a new leaf over with me.  Pink sauce added just enough flavor and helped bring everything together.  I work order these again, although some may feel that for $5 you should get another slider, I thought the quality of the sliders made them worth the price.

Piaggio on Wheels Chicken Empanada

Piaggio on Wheels Chicken Empanada

On to the Steak Taco and Chicken Empanada.  Unfortunately the taco was pretty much a miss.  The meat lacked much flavor and I would have preferred the meat under the produce, because when I took my first bite all the meat fell out of the taco.  I will say that the tortilla used was very good, it didn’t have an overpowering taste to it, like some corn tortillas tend to have.  The Chicken Empanada on the other hand was superb!  I’m not quite sure exactly what they put in it, but whatever it was made it good, and I enjoyed using the side of chimichurri sauce to dip it in, it added more flavor to the party.

Overall it was a good meal, even with the miss on the steak taco, but there are enough other items on their menu that could replace it that I’m not afraid of being let down next time.

Orange County’s own Bruery in Placentia had a conditional use permit approved by the city council on Tuesday, one of the last steps in opening The Bruery Café in May.  The café will feature more than just their own brews, with hopes of showcasing other microbeers as well as wine and snacks.  Read the full article from Food GPS for more information.  Stay tuned on The Bruery’s website for more information!

by DanGarion March 10, 2010

Over on Serious Eats today they have an article about “How to Judge a Mexican Restaurant“.  They spoke of the “Chile relleno test”.  I’ve actually heard of a test like this from others, but it was more specifically the chile relleno burrito that I was told helps one judge restaurant.  I’m sure we’ve all heard the [...]
